Natural landscape in George Hotel
This hotel has mixed reviews and I was a bit nervous when booking there 3 nights. But we loved it. The location is stunning directly by the river Tyne (which is the blackest river I ever have seen, by the way. Fascinating...). The hotel sits in a very beautiful and well kept garden and has nice seats outside. If (!) the weather allows, sitting in the garden is gorgeous (looking onto the river and the very old bridge). The middle part of the hotel is an old inn - as I understood from the 18th century. Loved this vibe. In walking distance is the beautiful village as well as a path by the river. Surrounded by picturesque landscape. Food was very good (diner and breakfast). Nice wines. Very cosy dining room and very cosy bar. Cannot praise the bar keeper enough. He was a really charming and cheerful person - his name starts with an "H" (unfortunately cannot remember more). Please keep him, he is the best! It is easy to visit Hadrian's Wall and Hexham from here. The whole area is fascinating and beautiful - a lot of history. Absolutely loved Hexham cathedral, by the way. Our room was basic, but with a lovely view to the river and a quite modern bathroom. Cannot complain. It was at the end of the garden in the annex. Would recommend that room. (Check carefully which room you book. I think they are different, especially the bath rooms).

Thank you to all the staff who were very friendly and helpful. The Breakfasts were very good, with plenty of fruits and cereals to choose from and the cooked breakfast was very good, and nice tasty bacon and sausage, poached eggs cooked just right! Evening Meals were excellent with a good choice on menu. I have allergies and they took great care when preparing my meal, Our room was fine, situated overlooking the garden and the River Tyne which was lovely, comfortable bed and nice and quiet, so slept well. I preferred to have a bath in the room, but we only had a shower, but we managed with that anyway. Overall very pleased with our stay and would stay here again. Shirley and Mike

Food was lovely no fault at all. Lots of choice at breakfast. The rooms were clean but there were (I know a bit petty) but cobwebs in corners and on light flies were in the shade. One main thing that would have been some information in the room, different things about the hotel ie the history of the hotel and places to go and the area whilst visiting. The gardens that had little ponds were all covered in green fungi and if children were running around outside it was very easy for them to fall into. Not a very nice site, a bit of a clean would be nice so show proper water in it. The room needs a bit of tidying up - a little bit drab.

The setting was lovely right by the river and beautiful stone bridge. Lots of sitting lounge areas which had wood burners so in winter would be very cosy. Staff on reception so welcoming and all staff friendly. Perfect location for all Hadrians wall sites. Didn’t use the swimming pool but it looked a good size with jacuzzi too. Hotel all seemed very clean and well decorated. It has a quirky layout merging the old buildings with the new but lovely gardens and lots of seats.

The hotel is in a beautiful location. I stayed whilst visiting my mum who has recently moved to a nursing home so needed somewhere close to Hexham. The room was fine for the price and I slept really well because it was very quiet. It was also very clean. I enjoyed the breakfast and there was a good range of food. Again, for the price it was good value. The staff were all lovely and very friendly and helpful.
